Malarkey Shingles Installed in BC

Standard shingle asphalt is oxidised. It is stiff from the first day and gets stiffer as it ages and sheds its oils. Malarkey modifies its asphalt with SBS rubber polymer, so the mat stays pliable for longer. In practice that means better sealing in cool weather, more resistance to cracking around fasteners, and less brittleness when someone walks the roof in January.

Laminate asphalt typically gives roughly 25 to 30 years of service, but coastal roofs usually lose to moisture and shade before sun. Moss on north slopes holds water against the mat and lifts tabs as it thickens. Attic ventilation matters too, because heat and damp trapped under the deck age the asphalt from underneath. Cleared moss and clear gutters buy years.

Wind ratings are conditional, not automatic. They assume the specified fastener count, commonly six nails per shingle in high-wind applications, driven flat in the reinforced nailing zone, plus a properly sealed starter course along both eaves and rakes. Nails set high, overdriven or angled cost you the rating and give wind somewhere to start. Sealant strips also need warmth to bond fully.

The streaks are algae, gloeocapsa magma, feeding on limestone filler in the shingle. Malarkey lines with 3M copper granules release copper slowly and suppress growth for a limited period rather than forever. On heavily shaded north slopes under trees, expect some return. Pressure washing strips granules along with the algae, so a gentle wash and trimming overhanging branches is the safer maintenance.
