Roof Repair That Finds the Source

It depends on age, extent and the condition of the shingles around the damage. A roof in its first two thirds of life with one damaged area, sound decking and shingles still flexible enough to lift is a repair. A roof shedding granules heavily, cracking when tabs are lifted, or leaking in three or four unrelated places is telling you the field is done, and patching it buys months.

Rarely a perfect match. Asphalt shingles are made in colour lots and they fade as granules weather, so a new bundle sits brighter than a roof that has had ten summers on it. The difference usually closes within a couple of seasons. If you have leftover bundles from the original install, keep them, they are the closest match you will get.

Not long. The visible drip is a fraction of what the roof is absorbing. Plywood sheathing swells and delaminates once it stays wet, insulation that gets wet and mats down does not recover its full R-value, and mould starts in a warm cavity within a few days. A repair that is straightforward in the first week becomes a decking and drywall job by the third month.

Emergency work happens in any weather, but it is protection, not a finished repair. A tarp fastened over the ridge keeps water out until the deck dries. Cold matters too. Asphalt shingles go brittle below about 5C (40F) and the self-sealing strip will not bond without sun, so tabs are hand-sealed with roofing cement and the bond is checked later.
